Datawitness® Authentication and Archiving Service Available on BC OnLine
May 1st, 2006 - Datawitness Online and BC OnLine announce the availability of a new service focused on authenticating and archiving electronic records.
The new national standard for the introduction of electronic evidence in the courts has paved the way for Trusted Third Party services like Datawitness based in Surrey, BC.
Datawitness is a service company that captures electronic records as they move through a secure and structured process. Each electronic record is time and date stamped and committed to microfilm -- all within the guidelines advanced in the new standards.
In December 2005, the Standards Council of Canada approved and released "Electronic Records as Documentary Evidence" and it promises to have every Information Manager and Records Manager reviewing their policies, procedures and systems to gauge the reliability, integrity and authenticity of their electronic records.
CAN/CGSB-72-34 specifies the policies, procedures, practices and documentation that organizations need to establish should those records be needed as evidence in litigation. Based on the Uniform Electronic Evidence Act, the Canada Evidence Act and PIPEDA (Personal Information Protection and Electronic Documents Act), the new standards follow a technology-neutral path, emphasizing the authenticity and integrity of electronic records.
The Datawitness service is now available to BC OnLine deposit account holders and can be accessed through the user menu options upon log in. After signing up for the service, users will be able to access their Datawitness account in a single sign on process. Any electronic document submitted to or downloaded from BC OnLine can be submitted for archiving and authentication.
